Rain water harvesting

Mar Ivanios College is always committed to environmental freindliness. The mission of the college envisages to train young men and women, among other things, with ecological consciousness. Kerala is blessed with southwest and northeast monsoon rain every year However, during summer scarcity of water is a severe problem and measures are necessary to store rain water scientifically. The Mar Ivanios Vidyanagar Campus, a centre of learning, comprising a large number of institutions requires large quantity of water for meeting its requirements. Hence an integrated approach for water procuration, storage, treatment and distribution of water is being implemented to har-ness the potential of rainwater inside the campus in a scientific manner. This is significant, as the potential had not been fully exploited so far in this campus of almost 200 acres having several water sources like dug wells, open ponds, bore wells and municipal water supply to cater to the water demands. Institutions covered under this project include Mar Ivanios College, Mar Baseli-os College of Engineering & Technology, Sarvodaya School, St. John’s higher secondary school, Teachers training college and Mar Aprem Men’s hostel. The work started in September 2013. The estimated budget is Rs 2.11 crores. The reservoir is constructed in an elliptical shape to-wards the eastern side of MBCET behind Mar Ivanios College Stadium. Population benefited by the scheme are around 12,325 comprising of Residents and Non-resident students and Staff of the above mentioned institutions, with a water demand of 582m3/day.
