Call for Papers:
COVID-19 has augmented technological interventions in human life in many facets. The urge to replace the ‘social’ with the ‘virtual-social’ has paved the way for new habits and ways of life enabled by digitally driven networks and technology. The thematic platform of the seminar foregrounds media as a confluence of networked entities which not only augment information diffusion but also transform the very nature of the message formulation and reception process. Lessons of history, a comprehensive understanding of culture and its interaction in the amalgamation of communities, and new pathways to redraw the canvass of human development by improving the quality of life and death are imperative to advance theory building as well as to improve practices of the networked media.
The seminar raises new questions on the ruptures in the societal fabric due to communication inequalities in a fragile post-pandemic world. In this process, the seminar aims at mapping the paradigmatic turns in the communication ecosystem prevailing worldwide through the lens of culture and culture industry, aspirations for the future, and lessons from past experiences.
The seminar will also be a platform for dialogue between industry and academia to discuss the issues of disconnection, disenchantment, and dilemmas in the world of media. It has another core area of discussion on media and gender which is expected to unravel bias and ‘othering’ in mediation and communication. We request the active participation of practitioners, academics, and anyone who has an interest in the fields above of inquiry and invite proposals to present a paper in the seminar. Selected papers will be published in the form of a book with an ISBN or in a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal.

Dungeons of Invisibility: Revisiting British Modernism It is widely understood now that British modernism was not just a unilateral artistic and aesthetic expression in literature. The contours of modernism are woven out of the cultural fabric of several misrepresentations, which stand in our time as historically unchartered areas. What made modern writing possible in W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and some other writers are then certain circumstantial and social differences. But British modernism tried to contextualize it as a dominating phenomenon – the reasons, the speaker argue are mainly the colonial interests and the surge of English academies in many parts of the globe. In the lecture, he will try to decenter some of these ideas connected to modern narratives. By giving special emphasis on Eliot, Joyce and W.B. Yeats, he will try to argue the “invisible other”, which so far has not been a part of academic study. He also will argue that our academic discipline has been stringent to conceive only the visible – that is, the textual and authorial points to highlight the oeuvre of modernism. However, It will try to open up a discourse connected to the dialectics that are inherently present in several modern narratives. How then can we theorize modernism will be the question this lecture would address. About the Resource Person Dr KRISHNAN UNNI P. is Professor in English at Deshbandhu College, Delhi University. He is a creative writer in Malayalam and in English and has published five books. He has edited Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Chronicle of A Death Foretold (World View Publications) and his debut novel in Malayalam, Keralam: Oru Documenta won the Karoor Neelakanta Pillai award in 2016, Abu Dhabi Shakti Award and Yes Press Novel Award in 2018. His latest book is on the Italian philosopher and theorist Giorgio Agamben published as part of the Theory series by S.P.C.S. Kottayam, Kerala in 2016. He was the recipient of the Rochester Fellowship to the University of Rochester, the U.S. in 2011. His recent project is on Contemporary Art Practices in India: Resistance and Subversion. Sneha Jose of S4 BA English main, a very promising talent of our College, has published a volume of poems (English) titled,
"Since Caedmon's Hymn". Hearty congratulations, Sneha!
Sneha has also set an excellent example by not only dedicating her book to her mother, but also insisting that her mother should release her book!
In Sneha's words,
"I couldn't think of a better person than my mom who is the sole reason for who I am today, to release my first book to the world. She is the one who taught me that my dreams will forever be dreams if I don't find the courage and persistence in bringing them to life. I take this opportunity to thank her for making me strong and determined enough to pursue what I dream. I would also like to thank all my well wishers and teachers who played a vital role in my life. Thank you all."
